Drexel's VPN Now Requires Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Once you login to the VPN, and click "Connect," answer your phone, and press the # sign. Or press "Approve" in the Microsoft Authenticator App notification (unlocking your phone may be required).

To set-up MFA, or change to the Microsoft Authenticator App (especially if you travel outside the U.S. and wish to avoid excessive call or data roaming charges), see the following webpage.


Method 1 -- OpenConnect app

Install and Configure

  1. Download, install, and open the OpenConnect app from the Google Play store. 
       (a) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.openconnect
       (b) Accept/agree to need permissions and license agreements.
  2. Tap the circled + sign to add a new VPN.
  3. In the "Add Profile" window, enter the following "hostname, IP address, or URL":

       vpn.drexel.edu

  4. Tap the back or left arrow that lets you go back on your Android mobile device.
  5. Proceed to the "Use" section immediately below.

Use

  1. In the OpenConnect app, ap the word "Drexel".
  2. Click "OK" on the "Connection request" window.
  3. Enter your Drexel Connect or DrexelOne userid and password in the "Drexel login" window.
       (a) Checking "Save Password" is recommended but optional.
  4. Tap "OK."
  5. IMPORTANT NOTE: The VPN app may say "Login failed" until your approve MFA if you use an Authenticator app.
  6. Use your Drexel Multi-Factor Authentication of MFA method to "Approve" the connection (or press # when called on the phone).

  7. When you see "Connected to Drexel," you are connected.

When finished, return to the OpenConnect app, and tap "DISCONNECT.

Remember that VPN's will slow down your internet speed, but good and trustyworthy VPN's like Drexel's provide a much more secure connection on wireless or mobile networks. And Drexel's VPN lets you access Drexel online resources not otherwise accessible off of Drexel's campus networks.

Method 2 -- Cisco AnyConnect app

Install and Configure

  1. Download, install, and open the Cisco AnyConnect app from the Google Play store. 
       (a) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cisco.anyconnect.vpn.android.avf
       (b) Accept/agree to need permissions and license agreements.
  2. Tap "Connections" > "Add New VPN Connection" > "Server Address".
  3. Enter "vpn.drexel.edu" (without quotes) as the "Server Address" or host name.
  4. Tap "OK."
  5. Tap "Done."
  6. Tap "vpn.drexel.edu."
  7. Proceed to the "Use" section immediately below.

Use

  1. In the Cisco AnyConnect app, tap the "Off" switch/toggle.
  2. Enter your DrexelOne userid or password.
  3. Tap "OK" or the like.
  4. IMPORTANT NOTE: The VPN app may say "Login failed" until your approve MFA if you use an Authenticator app.

  6. You should be connected.
  7. If all you see is a "Connecting... please wait" message, and a spinning circle, and it times out, and you have WiFi or mobile internet connection, use Method 1 above.
