Get Email Addresses to Appear in From Field

Introduction

Anything from any Drexel department, or any individual Drexel staff or faculty member, should have @drexel.edu as the last half of the email address.

  • Not @sfsu.edu or @gmail.com or And .drexel.edu@gmail.com or @anything_else.
  • @drexel.edu should be the end part of the email address.

Here is how to make it easier to see the last half of the "From" email addresses in emails you receive.

Outlook for Windows

No way to do this in Outlook for Mac. See Mail app on Mac section below.

  1. Make sure you are in your "Inbox."
  2. Click "View" tab in upper left.
  3. Click "Add Columns."
  4. In "Select available columns from," choose "All Mail fields."
  5. In "Show these columns in this order," click "Reminder," & click "Remove."
  6. In "Show these columns in this order," click "Size," & click "Remove."
  7. In "Show these columns in this order," click "Category," & click "Remove."
  8. Click "New Column...".
  9. Enter "Email Address" for "Name."
  10. For "Type," select "Formula."
  11. Click "Edit."
  12. Enter the following the white "Formula" box. Feel free to copy/paste.

    IIf(InStr([SearchFromEmail], "@") = 0, "drexel.edu", Mid([SearchFromEmail], "@") + 1))

  1. Click "OK." Click "OK" again.
  2. With "Email Address" selected in "Available columns," click "Add →".
  3. Click "Move Up" or "Move Down" to move "Email Address" under "From."
  4. Click "OK."
  5. Use you mouse to drag to expand the column lines next to "Email Address" so you can fully see the field.

Apple Mail or Mail app on Mac

If you use Apple Mail or Mail to check your email, here's how to compare names vs emails in the "From" field.

  1. Click "Mail" menu.
  2. Click "Preferences."
  3. Click "Viewing."
  4. Uncheck "Smart View."
  5. (Optional) Uncheck "Classic View." It may make it easier to preview emails and compare names vs emails in the "From" field.
  6. Close the "Preferences" window, navigate to a couple different folders, and/or close and re-open the Mail application.
Alternative Idea for Outlook for Mac or Other Email Applications

If you use Outlook for Mac, or another email application, try this:

  • Forward without sending the email if you are suspicious of it.
  • Scroll down to and look at "From" line or field in original email and see if you can see both the original sender's Name and Email address.
