Grade Center -- Extra Credit
If you wish to assign extra credit in Blackboard Learn, the following methods are probably the easiest way to go about doing so.
- Have a column with 0 points possible that is included in the Total column. Also, do not have a Weighted Total column in use (work-around for this below). For the Total column, it's recommended that you do have either the primary or secondary display show the numeric "Score."
- Add extra points to existing assignments, even adding points above the points possible for those assignments.
Adding extra 1% as extra credit if you have a Weighted Total Column?
Adding 1% (any %) EC to any grade calculations using Weighted Total is impossible within Bb Learn, but this workaround will give you the same effect.
So if you do use Weighted Total, here's how to do EC.
Make a regular column called "Total, Add 1 if EC" -- make its real column name BannerGrade, remove that column name from Total or Weighted Total and use the Grade Display Name as the Column Name -- with Primary Display as Letter, Secondary as Score. It's not a calculated column, but a regular column.
Take the Weighted Total column and make the Primary Display as percentage, Secondary Display as score, and again, remove BannerGrade as the Column Name (make it Weighted Total) so that you can use the Grade Submit Tool now with the "Total, Add 1 if EC" column.
Setting Weighted Total and making that new "Total, Add 1 if EC" column is important for the next step.
Now, click Work Offline in Full Grade Center, click Downloads, keep the defaults, download the file, ignore error message about file extension not matching, open the Excel/csv/tab-delimited file, copy/paste from the Weighted Total column in Excel to the "Total, Add 1 if EC".
Now, click again Work Offline in Full Grade Center, but now click uploads, upload the file, make sure ONLY the row with "Total, Add 1 if EC" changes is selected (scroll down the page and uncheck the rest), and submit.
You'll see the same grades that were in Weighted Total now in "Total, Add 1 if EC." Just manually increase the "Total, Add 1 if EC" by 1 if they do the survey or EC.
If neither of these approaches seem suitable to you and you still want to use extra credit in your course, let us know, and we'll see if we can find a way in Bb Learn.
If you do use extra credit, keep an eye on your Total and/or Weighted Total columns to make sure nothing unwanted is happening. Also, it's recommended to set the "Student Preview" to retain its settings after you exit it and to grade the "Student Preview" user to see if the grades perform as you expect.
